8th Grade: Analyzing Humor

How do the writer and director create humor?  Write a well developed analytical paragraph that examines the elements of humor-comic character(s) and situations-and the level(s) of comedy in the text.  Explain the intended humor.  Use examples from the text we have studied in class to support your ideas, and use humorous vocabulary words in your analysis.  Post by Friday, September 21st.

  1. A writer and an editor create humor with their facial expression and their body language. Many comedians use hand gestures to to help the audience relate with the joke. Comedians can use all sorts of comedy like low or high. In low the intended humor is to make the audience have a load burst of laughter. In high comedy the intended humor is to make the audience giggle, chuckle, or smile.

    1. Nice response Seth. Don't be confused between a writer/editor and a director/actor. While we have watched several clips of various genres of humor, writers use specific techniques to create humor. Think of the clip we watched today "Who's on First?" In this particular skit, what elements of humor did the WRITER use to create humor? Also think of the poem we read "To Morrow." Hope this helps! I look forward to your response!! :-)

  2. Writers and editors have to learn the comedy skills there are things such as high and low comedy's. Comideans normally write out all there stuff they are saying such as the sinefiled clip w watched. Their are several different typesof comedy. Alot of authors use word play. Most of the story's we have read in our springboard books use word play. People are different they don't laugh at some things others think are funny. There are many ways to describe the different ways of comedy. Christa W.

  4. Writers and directors both use comedy to make their audience laugh. Knowing their audience and what makes them laugh is a major part. Low comedy is inteded to make you bust out laughing, while high comedy is just for smiles and chuckles. Different things make different people laugh.

    1. Good point Kenzie! Knowing your audience is extremely important when writing. It helps to know your audience so you can decipher the proper comedic elements to incorporate so they can relate to your humor. Nice job!

  5. There's two different kinds of comedy, high and low.High comedy is "pure comedy," characterized by witty dialouge, biting humor,or criticism. Commonly used on sitcoms. Low comedy on the other hand is more like physical comedy, it's more broadly humorous. Seen on the three stouges.
The writer and director create humor by, using hyperboles, and puns. Directors use coincidences, something that don't normally happen, something out of the usual. Some people find it funny, some don't. We all have different perspectives on what we think is humor. Though when Oklahoma ran his head into the thing in the lunch room, we all thought that was funny!:)

  6. Writers express their emotions when their writing. Actors can act out the comedy but they add their own little something with that joke. They can create high and low comedies for the audience. High comedy is like a chuckle or a smile. Low comedy is like laughing out loud.

    1. Nathan, you are correct. Actors can certainly add a little "something" to enhance the humor of a scene or skit, just as we saw in the clips. Thanks for blogging! Keep up the good work!

  7. Writers and directors use hand movements, facial expressions, acting, and voice imations to catch the audiences attention. High comedy is just a chuckle or a smile, it doesn't really grab the audiences attention. Low comedy hilarious and really grabs your attention. An example of high comedy for me is on "First Base" how they said things, and how they used the props is what made it funny. An example Low comedy for me was when OK walked into the box thing in the lunch room, that was deffenitly low comedy for me.

  8. Writers and directors crest humor by trying to make the smallest things funny or by over exaggerating everything! Such as with hyperboles and puns, you can pretty much make anything funny if you try hard enough.

  11. Writers create humor be adding puns and funny word play in their stories or sometimes put funny things in their story that you can relate to and laugh at. Directors can put humor in their movies just by the tone of voice of face expressions. Some movies or stories have low or high comedy such as superhero movies usually have high comedy because you giggle here and there, whereas movies such as U-Jumpstreet can cause guffaws because it is low comedy, which is meant for people to bust out laughing. The writer obviously writes the humor or comedy and the director makes the comedy or humor into something like a comedy skit. The comedic skit could be either high comedy or low comedy. High comedy is intended to cause a giggle or a chuckle. Low comedy is intended to cause guffaws or side splitting laughter. Comedians use high and low comedy to get positive responses from the audience. Kila W.

  19. Writers fouces on what most of the crowd has in common and puts that into a joke. The more they can relate to it the more of a chanse the adience has to laugh, if the crowd were truckers they wouldnt like a joke about docters. Or 12th graders probably wont laugh at a joke like "why did the chicken cross the road" jokes they would probably laugh at a political joke or some even a blone joke. The directors will put the joke into actions making an act out of it and changing to be more expressive adding facial expressions, changing there tone (not making it sond like there reading it off a paper), and puting in body expressions to make the adience laugh more.

  21. The writer uses humor to make it seem like nothing is going to happen and then suprise you with something that is or you wouldn't think would happen. The director uses humor by making the story real and the director makes it look funnier than then book does. The director and writer uses witty words to make it sound funy. The high comedy means a smile, giggle, or a smirk. Low comedy is you are laughing so hard you can't stop. Lindsay C.
